Pediatrics Genetics Appointment – New York
On behalf of Dr. Carolyn Milana, Chair, Department of Pediatrics at Stony Brook Children’s, CareerPhysician, LLC, the leader in academic pediatric executive search, has initiated a national search to identify an outstanding geneticist to join the department of pediatrics. The new geneticist will partner with Dr. Patricia Galvin-Parton and a fantastic team of advanced practice providers and ancillary support to serve an integral role in furthering the reputation and capabilities of the genetics division, supporting the needs of kids and their families.
We believe this to be an excellent opportunity for a geneticist seeking a role in pediatrics in the greater New York City metropolitan area. The selected geneticist will have ample opportunity to participate in leadership endeavors, strategy and planning committees, mentoring of junior faculty, and professional growth and advancement. The institution offers a Leadership Academy committed to preparing emerging leaders for promotion and career advancement.
Opportunity Highlights:
The genetics division is responsible for patient consults in the NICU, PICU and the General Pediatric wards. Faculty have ample opportunity to work with learners in identifying rare genetic disorders, providing residents with the opportunity to submit abstracts to national meetings and/or publish in a peer review journal.
The joining geneticist can expect to have 3 to 4 patient slots during each session and will be expected to cover 6 sessions each week (3 days total). Inpatient consultation weeks are currently alternated with Dr. Galvin-Parton and shared with a dedicated nurse practitioner and full-time dietician.
Geneticists are active in teaching and participating as a Grand Rounds speaker at local hospitals and regional medical centers on Long Island. The division is currently in a funded, New York State project to support long-term follow up for metabolic patients.
Stony Brook Children’s offers Whole Genome Microarray, Whole Exome Sequencing and Xome Express as send out tests on a weekly basis. The division also offers patients Whole Genome Sequencing.
The onsite laboratory can support short Column AAs, including branch chain amino acids and Phe/Tyrosine, as well as Homoscysteine, Lactic Acid, Ketones, CPK, and STAT ammonia levels.
DNA panels and WES are offered by a few partners, including GeneDx, Invitae and Prevention Genetics.
The successful candidate will possess or learn how to effectively cross cover metabolic patients, including the management of referrals from newborn screening. The genetics division benefits a collaborative relationship with the emergency department. The ED division, led by Dr. Carl Kaplan, provides support in evaluating patients, including newborn screening, and are responsive to metabolic patients.
The compensation structure for this role will consist of a guaranteed salary, plus a productivity incentive. A sign-on bonus and relocation package will also be included.
