Duties and Responsibilities of Medical Director, Epilepsy/EEG

General: Provide the medical leadership required to oversee the adult Epilepsy program.

  • Develop plans which would enable the hospital center to establish a seizure/epilepsy monitoring program that would provide efficient and competent video monitoring to aid in the determination of patient diagnosis and subsequent treatment.
  • Interface with administration on staffing and capital requirements that must be available to properly run an efficient service.
  • Interpret and report EEG studies (Paterson/Wayne). Assure that all studies are interpreted and reported in an appropriate time frame.
  • Establish and oversee an EEG reading panel.
  • Conduct educational meetings with technologists to teach, to review records and to improve techniques, and to monitor quality of studies.
  • Conduct nursing staff ongoing in-service education. Assist in review of nursing policies and procedures as they relate to video monitoring of patients.
  • Develop CQI and PI plans with staff, review outcomes and implement corrective action plans.
  • Assist in marketing development and outreach efforts to hospital and community physicians.
  • Evaluate new and existing equipment, help technologists in troubleshooting problems, meet with company representatives to maintain proper maintenance, upgrades and insure proper equipment utilization by the program.
  • Implement and conduct combined adult and pediatric Epilepsy conferences/meetings.
  • Present Grand Rounds or other similar lectures.
  • Implement epilepsy teaching rounds with house staff.
  • Attend meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief, Neurology and Chairman of Medicine.

Duties and Responsibilities of Attending Physician:

Clinical

  • Serve as consulting neurologist on unassigned and private patients (initial consult and follow-up on the medical floor, Neuro/Stroke Unit, ICU).
  • Share general neurology call coverage (approximately 1:4)
  • Precept Neurology clinic (1 morning/week) (DePaul Center)
  • Collaborate with designated Advance Practice Nurses assigned to neurology/stroke
  • Read/interpret/report EEGs
  • Private practice office (mix of epilepsy and general neurology)
  • Participate in ongoing clinical research and clinical trials

Administrative

  • Assist in development of clinical guidelines for neurology, epilepsy and EMU.
  • Attend neurology/stroke/Department of Medicine meetings as required.
  • Participate in quality improvement and performance improvement efforts within the Division of Neurology

Teaching

  • Responsible for teaching medical residents and students rotating through Neurology
  • Provide lectures/Grand Rounds/M&M for medical residents as requested
  • Collaborate with Nursing and other departments as needed in educational efforts related to Neurology

General

  • Perform all other duties as assigned by Chief of Neurology, Chairman of Medicine.
  • Maintain ABMS recognized Board Certification in Neurology or one of its subspecialties.
  • Develop a specific area of clinical interest within the Neuroscience Service Line.
