  • Dr. Chris DeRienzo serves as Chief Patient Safety Officer for Mission Health System in Asheville, NC. He received both his M.D. and Masters in Public Policy from Duke University in 2008 and continued at Duke for residency training in Pediatrics and fellowship training in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. He is a practicing Neonatologist with Mission Children's Specialists and maintains an appointment as Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics with the Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. DeRienzo is national leader in neonatal patient safety and quality improvement. A graduate of Duke’s Physician Leadership in Patient Safety and Quality Course and the Fuqua School of Business Healthcare Management and Leadership Course, Chris spends his clinical, administrative, and research time focused on eliminating preventable harm to patients. He has published and presented extensively on quality improvement, transitions in care, and neonatal clinical outcomes, received multiple clinical and teaching awards and is a Team STEPPS Master Trainer. Chris was also the fourth medical student to serve two terms on the American Medical Association Board of Trustees. He is a Past-President of the Durham-Orange County Medical Society and has served in the leadership of the American Academy of Pediatrics Training and Early Career Neonatologists’ group and the North Carolina Medical Society's Residents and Fellows Section. Dr. DeRienzo was also an inaugural Doximity Fellow and advises the North Carolina Division of Public Health as a member of the Healthcare-Associated Infections Advisory Group Chris is the proud father of three young children, an avid runner and triathlete, and a "West Wing" devotee. He lives with his wife Melody and their family outside of Asheville, NC.
