  • Dr. Chris DeRienzo serves as Vice President and Chief Patient Safety Officer for Mission Health System in Asheville, NC. He received his M.D. and Masters in Public Policy from Duke University in 2008, and stayed for both residency training in Pediatrics and fellowship training in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. He is a practicing Neonatologist with Mission Children's Specialists and maintains an appointment as Adjunct Faculty in Pediatrics with the Duke University School of Medicine.

    Dr. DeRienzo is national leader in neonatal patient safety and quality improvement. A graduate of Duke’s Physician Leadership in Patient Safety and Quality Course and the Fuqua School of Business Healthcare Management and Leadership Course, Chris spends his clinical, administrative, and research time focused on improving population health outcomes and eliminating preventable harm to patients. He has published and presented internationally on quality improvement, transitions in care, and the effects of America's analytics revolution in healthcare, has received multiple clinical and teaching awards, and has been continuously grant-funded in his research since 2011.

    Chris was also the fourth medical student to serve two terms on the American Medical Association Board of Trustees. He is a Past-President of the Durham-Orange County Medical Society and has served in the leadership of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the North Carolina Medical Society. He is also a Team STEPPS Master Trainer and was an inaugural Doximity Fellow. He currently serves as Chair-Elect of the Board for the Western North Carolina March of Dimes, advises the North Carolina Division of Public Health as a member of the Healthcare-Associated Infections Advisory Group, and is an invited member of the Joint Commission Physician Leader Forum.
