Doximity Reaches More Than 50% of All US Physicians in Just Over Three Years

Vertical Social Platform is Largest Network of US Physicians Ever Assembled

December 9, 2014 — Doximity, the leading professional network for physicians, announced today that more than 50 percent of all US doctors have joined its network in just three years, an unprecedented rate of adoption for the digital health sector. After doubling in 2013, Doximity’s growth accelerated in 2014 to now over 400,000 members, making Doximity the largest secure network of doctors ever created and the profession’s most rapidly adopted new technology — other than the iPhone.

Since its launch in 2011, Doximity has provided a platform for physicians to connect, collaborate, and collectively provide better care for their patients. Doximity is already seeing member engagement exceeding that of general professional networks (e.g. LinkedIn) — no small feat given the time-pressures of doctors. To date, physicians have made 21.2 million professional connections on Doximity, averaging 53 colleagues per member.

“We’re excited about 50% -- it’s a huge milestone for us -- but we still have a long way to go toward our vision of building a safe corner of the internet for clinicians to collaborate. Doctors deserve to have better technology than teenagers,” said Jeff Tangney, Doximity CEO and founder. “As it stands today, physicians waste a third of their time on redundant paperwork, faxes, phone tag, and pagers. With our referral directory, secure email, scheduling, and collaboration tools, we’re doing our best to help.”

As a vertical social network, Doximity has focused on creating features to serve the unique needs of its physician audience. After completing a security verification on the network, physicians have access to:

  • An online professional CV: Basic profile information is pre-populated and physicians can email their CVs to Doximity for upload—taking the work of maintaining an online profile off the hands of busy clinicians. The average Doximity profile has 28 items completed, including clinical interests, education, board certifications and publications.
  • DocFax: A free digital fax and messaging service that enables HIPAA-secure communication from any computer or mobile device.
  • DocNews: Physicians receive personalized medical news and research updates based on their professional interests. Thanks to a collaboration with Cleveland Clinic, physicians use this to meet their continuing medical education requirements.
  • Residency Navigator: Choosing a residency training program is perhaps the most important decision in a physician's career. To help navigate this process, Doximity created the first-ever public ranking of medical training programs and a comprehensive online reference of program details and professional outcomes for graduates.
  • Career opportunities: Members can opt to receive targeted career opportunities, specifying their preference for location, schedule and compensation. To date, over 215,000 job opportunities have been extended to Doximity physicians.
  • Login with Doximity: More than 100 healthcare apps now use Doximity’s API to allow physicians to quickly register and sign into their medical sites and services.

“Vertical social networks are emerging as the new guilds in today’s workforce. They give like-minded professionals the opportunity to connect and learn from one another in a safe environment tailored to their industry, without extraneous noise and distractions,” said Konstantin Guericke, co-founder of LinkedIn and Doximity board member. “Doximity has really taken the time to listen to doctors and has built a platform to reflect their needs. The company’s growth is a clear indicator that they’re onto something big.”

Understanding that medicine is a team sport, Doximity has established business relationships with some of the most-respected leaders in healthcare, including 4 of the top 5 medical schools; over 200 hospitals; and U.S. News & World Report.
