Overview of Dr. Gomoll

I focus on joint preservation and cartilage repair in the knee joint at the Hospital for Special Surgery,

Besides a busy clinical practice, I am an active researcher developing and participating in studies investigating advanced treatment options for joint injury, such as cartilage transplants and stem cells for cartilage repair and arthritis treatment.

I was born in Munich, Germany, where I grew up and attended school. I graduated with a MD from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet Medical School and a PhD from Technische Universitaet, both in Munich. After one year of Internship at Bogenhausen Hospital, I moved to Boston for a 2 year research fellowship in the Orthopaedic Research Lab at Brigham and Women's Hospital with Drs. Tom Thornhill and Dick Scott.

Subsequently, I completed a General Surgery Internship at Brigham and Women's Hospital, followed by an Orthopaedic Surgery Residency in the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program, working at BWH, Mass General Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess and Children's Hospital, Boston.

I further specialized in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at Rush University Hospital, Chicago, with Drs. Bach, Cole, Nicholson and Romeo, before returning to Boston to join the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital as a Surgeon in the Division of Sports Medicine and the Cartilage Repair Center, co-Director of the BWH Center for Regenerative Medicine and head of the BWH Program for Orthopedic Regenerative Medicine.

In 2018 I moved my practice to the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

I have published 5 books and authored over 70 articles on sports medicine and cartilage repair related topics, and regularly lectures at national and international conferences.
