Oncology Seattle, WA

Acting Instructor, Hematology-Oncology at University of Washington

  • As senior fellow and acting instructor in the Div. of Oncology at the Univ. of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, I have been involved in a variety of clinical and translational research projects focusing on lymphoma. Under the mentorship of Ajay Gopal, I am focusing on novel therapies for relapsed and refractory malignant lymphoma, and autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation for lymphoma. In a recent translational project I analyzed the effects of combining bortezomib and fenretinide (an oral pro-apoptotic retinoid) in mantle cell lymphoma cell lines. Combining these 2 agents was found to be synergistic in 3 different mantle cell lymphoma cell lines.

I have analyzed and summarized data from a prospective Phase I and II clinical trial of fenretinide and rituximab in indolent B-cell lymphomas. We are creating a database of unselected mantle cell lymphoma patients who underwent autologous stem cell transplantation, narrowing in on variables that impact prolonged remissions and minimal residual disease prior to transplantation. The presence of minimal residual disease, as assessed by either flow cytometry or polymerase chain reaction, stratifies patients into low or high risk of relapse after autologous transplantation. These findings were first presented at the annual American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation meeting in Feb 2015 before publication.

Before my fellowship, I was a Clinical Instructor at Boston Univ. School of Medicine. While at BU, I worked in Amyloidosis Center in the Div. of Hematology and Oncology as the 'amyloid internist,' a member of the multi-disciplinary team involved in the care of patients with amyloidosis. I also conducted clinical research in gastrointestinal amyloidosis and the impact of bone marrow amyloid deposits on stem cell mobilization and collection prior to autologous stem cell transplantation.
