Summary
- I am a board-certified psychiatrist with extensive experience as clinician, researcher and administrator in Federal, State and University-based systems. I am currently the Director of the Division of Epidemiology, Services and Prevention Research at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). My overall scientific goal is to advance the understanding of psychiatric disorders and to develop and implement of equitable learning healthcare systems. I have conducted pioneering work on the epidemiology, prevention and treatment of psychiatric disorders that has shaped national thinking and guided the development and implementation of large research initiatives of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
I am an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the recipient of multiple leadership and research awards, including the Van Ameringen, Senior Health Services and Simon Bolivar Awards of the American Psychiatric Association, the Lifetime Achievement American Society of Hispanic Society, the Research Award of the New York Council on Problem Gambling and the NIH Director’s Award. I have authored of over 350 peer-reviewed scientific articles.
