  • Dr. Clifton Gooch is Professor and Chair of Neurology & Associate Dean for Clinical Research at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine. He also holds the Tampa General Hospital (TGH) Endowed Chair in Neurology and is Vice President for Clinical and Translational Research at TGH, as well as Chief of the TGH Neuroscience Institute. Under his leadership, USF Neurology has become a major force in medical research (with over 150 active clinical trials as well as NIH and other studies), while also providing the very best of neurological care and education. He has served as President of the Association of University Professors of Neurology (AUPN; the international organization for chairs and leaders in academic neurology), Treasurer of the American Neurological Association (ANA; the national organization for all of academic neurology), and has served as on the Board of Directors for the AUPN, the ANA, the AANEM (the national organization for neuromuscular medicine) and the National ALS Association. Dr. Gooch has held numerous other major leadership roles at USF, serving as the founder and Director of both the USF Neuroscience Collaborative and the USF ALS Center, and as a founder and early leader of the USF Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute. Previously at Columbia University, he was Chief of Neuromuscular Physiology, Director of the Columbia Neuropathy Research Center and Director of the Columbia and New York Presbyterian Hospital EMG laboratories. Dr. Gooch has a major research interest in developing new and better therapies for neurological disease, with a particular focus on the neurodegenerative and neuromuscular disorders. He is an active medical writer and has served on numerous editorial boards for major neurology journals, and has been an invited speaker and faculty for many academic organizations and institutions throughout the country and internationally.
