  • Interventional endoscopist and endosonographer with an advanced skill set and a reputation for dedication to his patients. Expertise and research interests include endoscopic treatment of GERD, POEM for gastroparesis and achalasia, advanced resection, endoscopic closure of postoperative leaks and fistulas, EUS-guided transmural drainage (abdominal abscess, pancreatic necrosis, bile duct, gallbladder), and management of chronic pancreatitis.

National speaker and proctor for TIF (transoral incisionless fundoplication). Speaker for submucosal lifting agent. Speaker for management of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and inflammatory bowel disease.

Dr. Penn's career began in the medically underserved area of Statesboro, GA, where he worked for six years and served as Director of Endoscopy and Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. He left Statesboro in 2018 and joined staff at SGHS in Brunswick, but left in 2019 when an opportunity arose to work in a large, academically-oriented tertiary care center in Macon, GA. Here he has joined 3 expert gastroenterologists who are well-respected in the community and in the region. As an associate professor at Mercer University School of Medicine he enjoys teaching and research opportunities not previously available to him.

Endoscopic Gastric Pouch Revision for weight regain after Roux-en-Y bypass

RYGB loses effectiveness after about 10 years. Surgical revision is difficult, but endoscopic revision (using Overstitch) is safe and effective.

    TIF Procedure Animation

Almost 100 TIF procedures for chronic GERD. 95% of patients have had complete resolution of their symptoms and are no longer on acid suppression

EDGE procedure: retro-view within the excluded stomach

EUS guided transmural stent placement can be used to rejoin the pouch and excluded stomach in RYGB patients to allow for ERCP.

    EUS-guided transcolonic (diverticular) abscess drainage

Extraluminal abscesses like this one (13 cm diverticular abscess) can be drained completely with EUS-guided transmural stents, avoiding the need for diversion.
