Summary
- Dr. Jay Iams is an Emeritus Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. After receiving BA and MD degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he served in USPHS &completed a rotating internship at the University of New Mexico and a year of pediatric residency in Phoenix before moving to Ohio State in 1975 to train in obstetrics and gynecology and maternal fetal medicine with Dr. Frederick Zuspan. His clinical and research interest is prevention of prematurity. He created a prenatal clinic devoted to care for pregnant women at risk of premature birth at Ohio State in 1982, and saw patients there until 2014. He is currently the Obstetrical Lead for the Ohio Perinatal Quality Collaborative, a statewide voluntary group whose goal is to assure optimal perinatal care for every pregnant woman and her baby in Ohio. He was the Principal Investigator at Ohio State in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Maternal Fetal Medicine Research Network from 1992-2016, and in the NICHD Nullipara Research Network from 2008-14. Dr. Iams was an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology from 1998-2016, and an editor of the 5th, 6th & 7th editions of Creasy & Resnik’s Maternal Fetal Medicine textbook. He served on the Maternal Fetal Medicine Division of the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology from 2001-07. He was a member of the National March of Dimes Scientific Advisory Committee on Prematurity from 2002 -2012, and served on the National Academy of Science Institute of Medicine Committee on Preterm Birth in 2005-06. He was president of the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine in 2003-04, and of the American Gynecological & Obstetrical Society in 2013. Dr. Iams received lifetime achievement awards from the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine in 2007 and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in 2011. He and his wife Pat have 5 children and 12 grandchildren.
