Summary

  • I am board certified in pediatrics and clinical genetics and have received a Master of Public Health degree with a concentration in international and maternal-child health. My research career initially focused on generating and analyzing transgenic animal models of cancer and using them to understand genomic alterations that occur during cancer progression. A key aspect of this work was to define in what ways animal models of cancer captured important pathologic and molecular aspects of these diseases in humans. Cancer models were also used to test chemopreventive and therapeutic strategies. Later work focused on dissecting mechanisms of metastasis and tumor recurrence and how these processes are influenced by the tumor microenvironment. (see Google Scholar).

My primary efforts now involve international maternal-child health. I am a co-leader of an International Community Access to Child Health (ICATCH) grant from the American Academy of Pediatrics to improve the care of children with cerebral palsy in underserved areas of Kampala, Uganda. Additionally, I serve as the Program Director for the pediatrics program in Nepal sponsored by Health Volunteers Overseas. I have also founded an NGO to improve the health of newborns in low- and middle-income countries.
