Summary

  • Dr. Bartels was the first fellowship trained otologist to set up a skull base surgery team in Florida, was one of Florida's earliest cochlear implant surgeons, did the first pediatric cochlear implant in Florida, and was one of the first to use lasers in ear surgery in Florida. He published on the safety of the KPT 532 laser in stapes surgery in 1989. He has been involved in multiple clinical trials for cochlear implants. He as worked with Advanced Bionics Cochlear Implant company's surgeons' advisory board and has chaired that group.
In the early 1990s, he was President of the USF College of Medicine Faculty Council and on the USF Physicians Group Board of Directors as an elected, at large member. He was Chief of Otolaryngology at Tampa General Hospital in the 1990s and Chief of Staff of Tampa General Hospital 2000-2002. He started the Tampa Bay Hearing and Balance center in 1995 which has grown to be one of the most prominent otology groups in the nation, now with Dr. Christopher J Danner and Kyle P. Allen. Dr Jay B Farrior, recently retired from private practice, now has an emeritus relationship with the Tampa Bay Hearing and Balance Center. The Tampa Bay Hearing and Balance Center focuses on tertiary care otology, neurotology, and skull base surgery.
Dr. Bartels invented the "Bartels titanium slotted bucket" stapes prosthesis with Grace Medical Inc in 2003. It seems to be the stapes prosthesis least likely to need revision stapes surgery.
Dr. Bartels has focused on a wide range of rare disorders of hearing loss, vestibular disturbances, skull base tumors, and facial nerve problems and their underlying genetics, pathophysiology, and management options.
