Summary

  • Michael Francis, MD
    Integrative Pain Medicine Specialist
    WHAT IS INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE?
    By Mindy Cordell
“Integrative Medicine is the practice of medicine that reaffirms the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare professionals, and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing.”
Dr. Michael Francis doesn’t just practice integrative medicine, he lives it. As an Anesthesiologist and Pain Medicine Specialist with both Integrated Pain Medicine in Slidell and Integrative Pain and Neuroscience in New Orleans, Dr. Francis employs both conventional and holistic methods to help patients get relief from chronic pain. Though his specialty is often referred to as “pain management,” he is quick to clarify. “I practice Pain Medicine. The management part is
    management of medications, and
in the midst of the opioid crisis, it is what we do best. To be clear, what we manage is the best behavior and the best outcomes for our patients. Their activities of daily living and functioning are our ultimate goals.”
Born and raised in New Orleans, Dr. Francis graduated from LSU Medical School, then went on
to complete his Anesthesiology residency and Pain Medicine fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin in the late 1980s. He returned to New Orleans following his training, where he practiced pain medicine and served as
    a Clinical Assistant Professor
of Anesthesiology, Pediatric Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at Tulane University Medical Center for more than a decade.
In 2005, Dr. Francis was invited to return to the Medical College of Wisconsin to take the helm of the their Interventional Pain Medicine program. There, he pioneered new methods and honed his knowledge of pain medicine protocols that integrated physical therapy, nutrition, and psychological
