Summary

  • Peter Wu, MD, FACS is a fellowship-trained surgical oncologist at the VA Puget Sound, Director of the VISN20 TeleTumor Board Program, Washington State Chair for the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, Director of the Department of Surgery Harkins Symposium, member of the Diversity Equity and Inclusion Council, Committee Chair of the former UW Medical Student Research Training Program, and a UW Associate Professor of Surgery.

Dr. Wu has clinical expertise in the management of tumors of the upper and lower GI tract with research interests in esophageal and rectal cancers; neuroendocrine tumors, pancreatic cancer, melanoma, retroperitoneal sarcoma, and breast cancer. Dr. Wu has led the regional VA TeleTumor Board and expanded its capabilities to include telepathology. To honor those that
have served, he strives to provide Veterans with efficient personalized comprehensive cancer care in a multidisciplinary environment and support the educational mission of the profession and institution. He maintains a translational laboratory at the VA Puget Sound with an interest treating advanced gastrointestinal malignancies and seeking a better understanding what causes tumor cells to "escape" cell death and enter senescence pathways following cancer treatment. He is a principal investigator for a VA Gastrointestinal Tumor Tissue and Blood Repository and his research funding has supported studies into molecular pathways of therapy-induced senescence, identify novel tumor-specific senescence biomarkers to predict treatment response, and reveal key checkpoints that could be targeted to block senescence escape and potentiate clinical treatment response. He has also been the institutional PI responsible for SWOG clinical trials conducted at the VA Puget Sound as well as other investigator-initiated studies.
