  • Richard J. Martin, MD, is Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the National Jewish Health, Denver, Colorado, and holds the Edelstein Professorship in Pulmonary Disease. He is Professor of Medicine at National Jewish, University of Colorado Denver, and Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

    Dr. Martin’s current areas of research include refractory asthma, the distal airways in asthma, the effect of a subacute bacterial infection on chronic asthma, and the mechanisms related to increased bronchial responsiveness in nocturnal asthma. He has authored 314 journal articles as well as many textbooks and book chapters on various topics related to respiratory disorders. He has served on the editorial boards of several journals and is a reviewer for multiple journals.

    Dr. Martin was inducted into the Colorado Pulmonary Hall of Fame in 2007; he received the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) Distinguished Scholar Award in Respiratory Health - 2003 through 2007; and he has been recognized in various publications including America’s Top Doctors and Who’s Who in America. He is a member of many professional associations including the ACCP and the American Thoracic Society (ATS), among others.

    A graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, Dr. Martin completed a residency in medicine at Tulane University and a pulmonary fellowship at the University of Oklahoma. He is board certified in both internal medicine and pulmonary diseases.
