Summary
- Dr. Crawford, a native of Guayaquil, Ecuador, is a highly experienced vascular and endovascular surgeon with demonstrated excellence in research, education, and patient care. He trained in vascular and endovascular surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he also completed research and surgical critical care fellowships. Dr. Crawford received his MD degree from the Medical College of Virginia, and was chief administrative general surgery resident at Wayne State University.
Dr. Crawford's major leadership roles at the University of Maryland included serving as co-director of the Center for Aortic Disease which he lead from its inception. He also served as the Medical Directir of the Vascular Surgery Progressive Care Unit, and Associate Program Director of the vascular surgery fellowship. He also led the development of the vascular acute care surgery (VAX) practice at UMMC, the first academic practice of its kind in the country. While at Maryland, Dr. Crawford, along with his colleagues, placed the first branched thoracic device in Baltimore and Maryland.
At Emory Dr. Crawford is primarily based at St. Joseph's Hospital. Dr. Crawford practices the entire breath of vascular surgery, which includes all endovascular techniques. Dr. Crawford's primary special interests include conplicated arterial surgery, aortic surgery, and particularly aortic dissection.
Dr. Crawford has published over 80 articles and book chapters and while at Maryland was awarded a Department of Defense Grant to study ischemia-reperfusion injury in the lower extremities. Dr. Crawford also served as the local PI for multiple industry sponsored clinical trials.
Dr. Crawford is a member of the Society of Vascular Surgery where he previously chaired its International Committte. Dr. Crawford is a regular speaker at national and international meetings and works with industry in the development of new devices. Dr. Crawford is fluent in Spanish.
