Summary

  • Sam is a retired general and vascular surgeon based in Salem, VA. He completed his medical education at Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1973, followed by a general surgical residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI, and a fellowship in vascular surgery at Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, TX. With Dr. ED Williams, he started a busy independent surgical practice in Roanoke, VA -end of 1980. His major vascular niche was dialysis access for renal failure patients. He served as clinical associate professor in the University of Virginia School of Medicine department of surgery and retired from active practice end of 2000. He became a Fellow of the ACS in 1985. Since 1990 -interspersed with his practice- he began serving short-term assignments at Christian mission hospitals around the world thru World Medical Mission, the medical arm of Samaritan's Purse. He has authored several articles and text chapters over the years and is interestingly part of the Ebersole-Williams sign- an eponym for a simple physical indicator of peritonitis, initially applied to typhoid perfs in Africa. Sam also worked extensively doing surgical locums 2009-18, in Virginia but mostly in SW US and Alaska. Since the Pandemic, he's been a volunteer doctor with Operation Heal Our Patriots, a ministry thru SP in Alaska for injured military couples. Sam married his ex-girlfriend in 1973. They've been together ever since. Sam and Liz would love to reconnect with old friends from training years!
