Summary

  • Dr. Duane earned a BS degree from Cornell University of Ithaca, NY and her MD from SUNY at Buffalo. She completed a general surgery residency at EVMS in Norfolk, VA with Dr. L.D. Britt. She completed a surgical critical care fellowship at the RA Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, MD. In 2016 she earned an MBA from the University of Massachusetts and a Certified Physician Executive in 2017 from the AAPL.
    Dr. Duane has a strong background in academic medicine including clinical productivity, research, teaching and administrative service.
    She has been recognized with numerous teaching awards and is an active mentor for students, residents and faculty. As a research scientist, she has received external funding from industry, has collaborated in multi-institutional trials, has presented nationally on numerous topics and has published in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. Her research interests are in clinical outcomes in acute care surgery, surgical infections and quality.
    She previously advanced her career in academic and health care administration particularly by focusing on the development of medical professionals within the health system to ensure that everyone involved in patient care has an opportunity to build quality care for patients. Nationally she has held numerous positions including serving on the Executive Council for the American College of Surgeons Board of Governors as the Quality Pillar Lead; a position that allowed her to have significant influence on the policies of quality and safety put forth by the ACS. She remains active in research serving as associate editor for Surgical Infections.
    Dr. Duane has redirected her efforts of quality to include locums work in remote places within the country to ensure that acute care surgery is available to all people within the US. Furthermore, she has found her true passion participating in medical missions to Uganda and is expanding her efforts to other impoverished areas around the world.
