Summary
- I am a medical oncologist specializing in testis cancer and other genitourinary malignancies. I currently chair the Testicular Cancer guideline panel at the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. A major focus of my work is teaching communication-skills to clinicians, as well as training others to teach communication skills. At the Cleveland Clinic, I helped develop and served on the leadership team of the Center for Excellence for Healthcare Communication where we have trained over 8000 clinicians in fundamental healthcare communication skills and have trained over 50 clinicians as trainers. I will serve as President of the Academy on Communication in Healthcare (ACH) for 2023 and 2024, and I was previously co-directer of the ACH faculty training program. At the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, I am the Associate Director of the communication skills course for first and second year medical students. Recently my work has focused on increasing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in healthcare and I am currently the DEI Officer for Graduate Medical Education at Cleveland Clinic.
I have taught communication skills to clinicians at national and international conferences and meetings of major organizations including the ACGME, AAMC, IHI, ASCO, and ACH. In addition to relationship-centered communication skills, workshops that I have led have focused on coaching, conflict engagement, team-building and feedback.
I also work in graduate medical education. I was program director of the hematology/oncology fellowship at Cleveland Clinic for ten years and currently serve as DEI Officer for GME at Cleveland Clinic and vice-Chair for Education at the Clinic's Taussig Cancer Institute.
