Summary

  • Dr. Cirocco received his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine (Detroit, MI). He also completed general surgery residency in Detroit at St. John Hospital, followed by colorectal surgery (CRS) residency at St. Vincent Health Center (Erie, PA). He started his career in academic surgery in New York City at SUNY-Downstate Medical Center (Brooklyn, NY), involved in seminal work using transrectal U/S for preoperative staging of rectal cancer, guiding the use of neoadjuvant (preoperative) therapy to downstage rectal cancer prior to surgical resection in efforts to improve outcomes such as increase disease-free survival (DFS) and also the odds of avoiding a permanent colostomy (anal sphincter preservation).
He took these advances in multidisciplinary management of rectal cancer to the Midwest (Kansas City, Detroit, Columbus), first in a community practice setting before his return to academic surgery as Professor of Surgery at Ohio State University (OSU) Wexner Medical Center & The James Cancer Hospital. He was charged with creation of a CRS residency training program at OSU (granted initial ACGME-accreditation in 2016 & later 10-year accreditation to 2028), serving as the OSU CRS Residency Program Director from 2013-2019.
He then accepted the challenge to create CRS services at MD Anderson Cancer Center affiliates in Phoenix (Banner), then Ochsner Health at the Ochsner-MD Anderson Cancer Center in Covington, LA on the Northshore of New Orleans (St. Tammany Parish Hospital). Dr. Cirocco is experienced in Colorectal Cancer (CRC), especially the multidisciplinary management of rectal cancer with goals of improving outcomes such as increasing DFS while avoiding a permanent colostomy (sphincter preservation). He also has expertise in benign conditions such as Diverticulitis, Rectal Prolapse, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD-Crohn's Disease & Ulcerative Colitis), Hereditary CRC and Familial Polyposis.
