We are seeking a Surgical Director for Heart Transplantation & Mechanical Circulatory Support to join the Spectrum Health Cardiothoracic Surgical Division. The transplant & VAD programs provide surgical options for patients in West Michigan and the region with end stage heart & lung disease. This is a great opportunity to work at the state-of-the-art Meijer Heart Center and in an endowed position as the surgical director of the Richard DeVos Heart & Lung Transplant Program.

Key Aspects

  • Provides leadership for a high-volume practice: 1500+ open hearts, 300+ TAVRs, 300+ thoracic, and 100+ VAD & transplants
  • Provides surgical expertise for all aspects of the transplant & VAD program
  • Partners with the heart, lung & VAD medical leadership to further grow and develop the programs in a high reliability manner with a focus on quality, safety & outcomes
  • Advises system leadership surrounding the care of patients treated in the program in accordance with all recognized national standards, evidence-based medicine, as well as accrediting bodies
  • Oversees and advises hospital administration on the surgical and clinical operations of the program
  • Trains physicians & team members in selection, perioperative care including technical performance of the operative interventions, and postoperative care of the transplant patient
  • Research opportunities as part of MSU along with support from the DeVos Cardiovascular Research Program & Van Andel Research Institute
  • Teaching faculty for ACGME fellowship program in Cardiothoracic Surgery

Requirements

  • Board certified in Cardiothoracic Surgery in the US
  • Able to obtain a full, active Michigan medical license
  • Post-fellowship training experience in VAD/transplant, and currently listed with UNOS as a primary or additional surgeon with a US heart transplant program
  • Currency with VAD surgery having performed a minimum of 10 VAD surgeries in the past 36 months
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in similar positions
  • Fellowship training in transplant surgery
