  • The Mayo Clinic Arizona Observation Unit is a 35-bed unit that centers care beyond the patient’s initial evaluation and treatment in the emergency department/clinic. It is the unit’s goal to determine inpatient admission or discharge in a less than 24 hour stay by conducting further testing, evaluation, and treatment.

The OBS unit provides comprehensive care, utilizing intensive case management and a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurse practitioners, and other clinical professionals. Collaboration of care is guided by specialized diagnostic protocols derived from clinical data and best practice guidelines.

Conditions that may require observation status include chest pain, dehydration, vertigo, transient ischemic attacks, congestive heart failure and others. To facilitate care, the unit is conveniently located adjacent to radiology and has a dedicated stress test room for our chest pain/cardiology patient population. The goal is to provide the best patient care in a safe and timely manner.

The Physician Assistant has advanced health assessment and decision-making skills, prepared through a formal educational program that meets criteria established by the profession. Physicians Assistants are certified by examination of an approved certifying body.
