The PA will evaluate and manage patients referred to the Pediatric Inpatient Pain Services and Pediatric Pain Clinic.
- The Pediatric Inpatient Pain Service provides consultation services for patients with complex pain and is actively involved in perioperative analgesia for pediatric patients.
- The NP will work with the Pain Service attending physician to develop a care plan for patients.
- There are additional opportunities to help with education of nurses, nurse practitioner students, medical students, residents, and get involved with the development of pain management protocols.
The PC Pain Service is an award winning, multi-disciplinary team with pain trained anesthesiologists, nurse practitioners, pain psychologists, nursing coordinators, physical therapists, and a research assistant.
About The Position The Physician Assistant will function as an independent healthcare provider working with physician care team on the multidisciplinary inpatient pain service and in the follow-up comprehensive pain clinic. As a member of the Phoenix Children’s (PC) Pain Service, the PA will be responsible for providing pain management services (acute and chronic pain) for pediatric patients in an inpatient setting and outpatient clinic setting.
Previous pain management and/or Anesthesia experience would be helpful in this role; however, experienced PA candidates with varied backgrounds are also encouraged to apply.
- For PA candidates without a background in pain management/Anesthesia, we have a comprehensive onboarding program to help with orientation and mentoring by the other physicians and nurse practitioners on the team.
- The PA who becomes part of our team will develop a high degree of clinical expertise working with patients with acute and chronic pain conditions. These conditions include acute postoperative and traumatic pain, cancer related pain conditions, and chronic non-cancer related pain conditions.
Job Details
- Perform and document the pre-anesthesia/pain assessment and evaluation of the patient.
- Review, request, and order laboratory/diagnostic studies.
- Obtain informed consent for anesthesia and related services.
- Select, obtain, order, and administer preanesthetic medication or treatment.
- Develop an anesthesia care plan with coordination from Anesthesiologist.
- Perform and document the post-anesthesia assessment and evaluation of the patient.
- Document accurately on the pre- and post- anesthesia record.
- Reports any anesthesia complications via proper reporting structures and obtains consultations and follow-up for patient safety.
- Facilitate emergence and recovery from anesthesia by evaluating patient response, and selecting, ordering, and administering medications, fluids, and ventilator support to maintain patient stability during transfer.
