Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides oncology-specific therapeutic care in holistic and systemic way to include the assessment and overall management of care for neuro-oncology patients under the supervision of an MD.
  • Exercises independent judgement in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of medical processes and procedures in accordance with the nurse practitioner/physician assistant licensure regulations of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and as delineated in the written Scope of Practice/Protocol for Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant. 
  • Supervises the care of the neuro-oncology patient providing oversight during active therapy, survivorship (including review of survivorship care plan), and palliative or hospice care. 
  • Responsible for the care of his/her patients, including (but not limited to), evaluating the patient at each clinic visit; management of symptoms related to the patient’s cancer and/or treatment; educating the patient about their disease; working with other disciplines (e.g. neurosurgery, radiation oncology); inpatient rounding and consults with attending physician; working closely with other clinical staff members to ensure the patient receives the proper diagnostic evaluation and treatment in a timely manner. 
  • Offers individualized assistance to patients, families, and caregivers to help overcome healthcare system barriers.  The nurse practitioner/physician assistant provides education and resources to facilitate informed decision making and timely access to quality health and psychosocial care throughout all phases of the cancer continuum.
  • Communicates effectively and works cooperatively with surgical, radiation, radiology, laboratory, pharmacy, chemotherapy infusion, physical therapy, nutrition, home health, hospice, and psychosocial support departments as well as outside agencies such as the American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute, genomics institutions, specialty pharmacies, and other cancer institutions for the care of the oncology patient.
  • Demonstrates leadership through critical thinking, decision making, and problem solving for specific oncology needs. Evidence-based/Best Practice: Utilizes evidenced-based standards, guidelines, and protocols for care delivery. She/he incorporates data and information to continuously improve services and practice to prevent side effects, enhance patient experience, and return patients to optimal health. 
  • Participates and promotes the advancement of oncology care through participation in clinical research as a sub-investigator through the recruitment, screening, consenting, and monitoring of clinical trial patients. 
  • Professional Development: Ensures improvements in practice settings by assuming responsibility for self-development in life-long learning.
  • Provides direction and guidance to the entire oncology team and serves as a resource and mentor.  Provider utilizes standards, guidelines, and protocols to determine best practices of care needs and decision making. 
  • Participates in lectures and formal patient education classes through Life with Cancer and other Inova Schar Cancer Institute programs.
