  • SUMMARY

    The Backus Medical Director has clinical requirements and is responsible for the day-to-day management of newborn operations within the Backus Hospital special care and newborn nurseries. The role is directly accountable for performance with respect to clinical care, quality, patient safety, operations, finance, and customer satisfaction.

    The Medical Director will be responsible for working with multidisciplinary teams and divisional faculty leaders to evaluate evidence-based Neonatology practice recommendations, reviewing and updating current protocols and procedures along with the development of new initiatives. The Director will work with the CCMC NICU Quality and Safety Officer, fellow CCMC Neonatology site directors across the network and the division chief in implementing standard clinical practice.

    ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Director is responsible for quality improvement initiatives, outcomes, and patient safety of the services delivered within the unit. Standard responsibilities include:

    *Direct the implementation of unit-based and institution-wide improvement initiatives *Direct the achievement of a robust set of improvement goals including development and implementation of clinical pathways and evidence-based best practices *Clinical services utilization review, oversee clinical peer review and quality assurance.

    The Director is accountable for the clinical and financial performance of the unit. Standard responsibilities include:

    *Ensure implementation of unit-based and institution-wide initiatives related to patient & family experience, provider satisfaction, and employee engagement *Address patient/family complaints as part of a management team *Work with on-site leadership to create the annual clinical operations budget and capital requests

    The Director relies heavily on collaborative and mutually supportive relationships with:

    *Nursing and clinical services leadership *Quality and Safety Staff *Fellow Department Chiefs *VP, Medical Affairs *Medical Staff President *CCSG President and Operations staff *CT Children's NICU Medical Director colleagues

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    The medical director is responsible for supervision of the advanced practice staff working within the nurseries and the neonatal medical staff providing care to newborns.
