Pediatric Cardiac ICU Physician Assistant

Work Details:

  • Patients per day: 20-bed main CICU and a 12-bed Intermediate Care Unit (IMU)
  • Pediatric heart failure and transplant management
  • Advanced mechanical circulatory support (PediMag, CentriMag, HeartMate 3, Impella)
  • ECMO and renal replacement therapies (including Aquadex)
  • Pulmonary hypertension management
  • Electrophysiology: temporary and permanent pacemaker management
  • Department Description:
  • Main CICU (20 beds): Reserved for the highest acuity patients requiring intensive monitoring, complex post-operative care, and advanced support therapies such as ECMO, CRRT, and ventricular assist devices.
  • Procedural competencies: APPs are required to independently perform essential bedside procedures including:
  • Removal of chest tubes, cardiac lines, pacing wires, and surgical drains
  • Board Certification: BC, BE -- must have Pediatric Acute Care certification if NP (no primary care)

Pediatric Acute Care Cardiology Physician Assistant

Specialty: PCCU – Pediatric Cardiology

Work Details:

  • Staffing Ratio: Day Shift: 6 patients per provider (6:1) and Night Shift: 15 patients per provider (15:1)
  • Hospital Bed size: 32-bed inpatient unit
  • Patient Population/Age: The unit primarily serves patients from two specialized cardiology service lines:
    1. General Cardiology a. Includes pre- and post-operative patients b. Management of congenital and acquired cardiac conditions
    2. PACC (Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Care) – focused on Heart Failure and Heart Transplant a. Includes transplant candidates and post-transplant care b. Complex medical management of advanced heart failure patients
  • Acuity Highlights: Patients often present with complex needs, including: · Stable VADs (Ventricular Assist Devices) · Trach/ventilator dependence · Inotropic infusions: Milrinone and Dopamine · Chest tubes (including management and removal) · External pacing wires (AAI mode only) · Stable peritoneal dialysis

PICU Physician Assistant

Schedule: 4-6 shifts per 4-week block

o Variable – days, evenings, nights, & weekends as part of a 24/7/365 coverage model

o Weekend, Night, and Holiday work is shared equally among all team members

o 12-hour Days/Nights (0700-1900, 1900-0700)

• Call: In-house night call responsibilities are shared among all team members who have completed orientation to nights.

• PICU: 6-8 patients during the day; night call includes all patients assigned to team at checkout as well as any new admission assigned to the team. Specialty skills and procedures: Arterial line placement, Central Venous Line Placement, Chest Tube Placement, Endotracheal Intubation, Lumbar Puncture, PICC Placement

• EMR: Epic

Credentialing timeframe: 90 days
