Job Highlights

  • The Fred Hutch Division of Radiation Oncology (FH RO) seeks candidates for its two-year Mentored Faculty Physician Scientist Program in Radiation Oncology (MFPSP-RO). A successful applicant will be an MD or MD/PhD committed to pioneering major advances in medical practice through research. Applicants should be interested in cancer research relevant to FH RO, including development of therapies that modulate the response to radiation therapy. Radiation Oncology Physician Scientist candidates will perform oncology and/or radiation biology research with access to state-of-the-art facilities and expert faculty members at Fred Hutch Cancer Center and the University of Washington.

FH RO has funding to support the incumbent's salary and lab expenses for two years of translational research training. The candidate's faculty mentor will provide dedicated space and may support additional laboratory and project funding beyond those available through the MFPSPRO funding. Up to 20% of the candidate's effort will be spent in clinical practice. The Physician Scientist is strongly encouraged to work with their mentor to apply for outside funding during their first year.

The Physician Scientist in this Program will develop a research project under the guidance of a FH RO faculty mentor. Projects may be predominantly clinical, correlative or lab-based but must be broadly focused on the development and/or improvement of cancer radiotherapy. Candidates may identify projects that require guidance from more than one mentor, as long as one is a Physician Scientist faculty member of the FH RO. Candidates may identify potential projects and mentors as part of their application. The Physician Scientist will participate in outpatient Radiation Oncology Clinic at Fred Hutch's South Lake Union Medical Center on the Fred Hutch campus. Clinical duties may be performed independently for board certified/eligible candidates, who must obtain a WA State Medical License, though guidance from established Radiation Oncology Attending faculty will be provided as for all junior faculty and instructors. The background and experience of the applicant will be taken into consideration when planning their clinical activity.

Candidates need to meet minimum requirements for clinical competency and credentialing, including passing a background check.
