  • The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and Oklahoma Children’s Hospital is seeking a dynamic and accomplished physician to serve as Section Chief of Pediatric Anesthesiology, with an academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The ideal candidate will be fellowship-trained in pediatric anesthesiology and demonstrate a strong commitment to clinical excellence, education, and academic leadership. Candidates with a substantial track record in clinical education or research may be considered for senior departmental leadership roles.

    The Section Chief will lead a multidisciplinary team of pediatric anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, and resident physicians, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based perioperative care for pediatric patients undergoing surgery, interventional procedures, imaging, and pain management. The Chief will work closely with the Clinical Director to oversee clinical operations and collaborate with surgical, medical, and nursing teams to optimize patient outcomes.

    This role also includes a significant academic component, with responsibilities in graduate medical education (GME), undergraduate medical education (UME), and clinical research. The division currently supports one ACGME-accredited pediatric anesthesiology fellowship position.

    The Section Chief reports directly to Kenichi Tanaka, MD, John Plewes Chair of Anesthesiology, who will provide support for faculty recruitment, development, and scholarly advancement.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Leadership & Strategic Oversight

    • Lead and manage the Pediatric Anesthesiology Section, fostering a culture of clinical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
    • Develop and implement clinical protocols and quality initiatives specific to pediatric anesthesia.
    • Collaborate with departmental and institutional leadership to align pediatric anesthesia services with strategic goals.

    Clinical Operations

    • Oversee the delivery of safe, high-quality anesthesia care for pediatric patients across all perioperative settings.
    • Ensure effective coordination with surgical, medical, and nursing teams to support comprehensive, multidisciplinary care.
    • Provide clinical supervision and mentorship to faculty, residents, and fellows.

    Education & Training

    • Support and enhance educational programs for medical students, residents, and the pediatric anesthesiology fellow.
    • Promote faculty development in teaching and mentorship.
    • Contribute to curriculum development and assessment in pediatric anesthesiology education.

    Research & Scholarship

    • Encourage and support faculty and trainee involvement in clinical research and scholarly activities.
    • Collaborate with institutional partners to advance research initiatives in pediatric anesthesiology and patient safety.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Medical degree (MD or DO) with board certification in Anesthesiology and subspecialty certification in Pediatric Anesthesiology.
    • Active medical license and eligible for licensure in the State of Oklahoma.
    • Eligible for privileges in pediatric anesthesia at Oklahoma Children's Hospital.
