Serve America’s Veterans in a mission-driven, well-supported hospice & palliative care program at the VA Maine Healthcare System. Aptive is seeking a full-time Hospice & Palliative Care Physician to join the Togus VA Medical Center’s 12-bed inpatient hospice unit and expanding interdisciplinary program program.
Position Highlights
- Stable Monday–Friday schedule (4×10 hr shifts)
- Weekend home call only every 6–8 weeks
- Mission-oriented care focused on comfort, quality of life & symptom management
- Collaborative interdisciplinary team (MDs, NPs, RNs, SWs, chaplains)

Role Overview
The physician will provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient hospice & palliative care across the care continuum. This includes symptom management, advanced care planning, telehealth consults, coordination with primary/specialty services, and contributing to education and program development.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide hospice & palliative care to Veterans with advanced, life-limiting illness
- Manage complex pain and non-pain symptoms
- Deliver inpatient & outpatient specialty consultations
- Participate in after-hours/weekend on-call rotation (home call, infrequent)
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary hospice team & community partners
- Teach and mentor GME learners (fellows, residents, med students)
- Support quality improvement & ensure compliance with VA and national standards
Compensation & Benefits
Salary: $200,000 – $315,000

Qualifications
- MD or DO from an accredited institution
- U.S. citizenship
- Board eligible at hire; board certified in Hospice & Palliative Medicine within 2 years
- Active, unrestricted medical license (any U.S. state or territory)
- Eligibility for VA credentialing & privileging
- Experience caring for patients with advanced, life-limiting illnesses
- Strong communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary model
- Teaching/mentoring experience preferred

$315-400k
