The Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School is recruiting a full-time academic hand specialist at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to join the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery and partner in a robust, growing practice within our Musculoskeletal Institute (MSK).

The position will join our expanding MSK Institute practice and have a unique opportunity to participate at the cutting edge of value-based Care delivery models in our multidisciplinary clinic and state of the art ambulatory surgery center, while simultaneously maintaining a tertiary referral practice at Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas. Resident teaching is an intimate part of our daily practice and strong participation with GME is an expectation of the position. The ideal candidate will have requisite skills to grow and maintain a clinical practice in the full breadth of hand conditions with a keen interest in training residents and students as well as helping to build our research endeavors in this area.

Essential Function

  1. Serve as a clinical content expert in Hand surgery as part of our residency teaching program and build out our research endeavor in collaboration with our other volunteer faculty.
  2. Build and lead a multidisciplinary team comprised of physical therapists, associate providers, social workers and dieticians as part of an Integrated Practice Unit approach to Hand conditions.
  3. Austin is a community with other excellent fellowship trained hand surgeons who serve as volunteer faculty. Therefore, this role requires an interest in complex cases and tertiary/quaternary care medicine in addition to caring for underserved patients as part of our population health focus.
  4. Participate in strategic planning and other efforts directly tied to the development and growth of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery and the MSK Institute.
  5. Develop partnerships with referring physicians, hospitals, and ancillary providers in Austin and Central Texas.
  6. Assist in the creation of a data and evaluation infrastructure for regularly assessing the clinical quality and cost outcomes for patients.
  7. Collaborate with other schools at UT Austin on multidisciplinary, value-based care models.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Medical degree from an accredited medical school;
  2. Current Board certification in Orthopaedic Surgery (or board eligible)
  3. Fellowship Training in Hand Surgery
  4. Unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Texas (or the ability to obtain prior to appointment);
  5. Ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary academic environment;
  6. Outstanding clinical teaching skills;
  7. Innovative self-starter with a commitment to excellence;
  8. Excellent communication, problem solving, and organizational skills;
  9. Eligible for appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience delivering care through a multidisciplinary team; as well as an interest in driving scientific inquiry and clinical/translational research.
  2. Interest or expertise in value-based care and/or musculoskeletal population health.
