  • Carle Health, in partnership with the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, seeks an innovative, dynamic and collaborative physician leader with a strong clinical and academic foundation to serve as the next Department Head to lead the Department of Clinical Sciences, which currently includes Sections of Pediatrics, Pathology, Emergency Medicine, and Radiology.  The Department Head serves as the principal administrative officer of the department and a key member of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine Dean’s senior leadership team. This leadership role will be a 30% effort and is critical to advancing the College’s mission of integrating engineering, technology, and innovation into medical education, research, and clinical practice.  This key academic physician leader will maintain clinical practice at Carle Health.

    Summary of Key Leadership Responsibilities:

     

    Departmental Leadership & Administration

    • Provide strategic direction and administrative oversight for departmental operations, faculty affairs, and academic medical directors.
    • Lead faculty recruitment, appointment, retention, promotion, and professional development processes.
    • Develop departmental policies, procedures, and by-laws aligned with college and university governance.
    • Foster a culture of shared governance, transparency, and professional accountability.
    • Oversee professional development including annual evaluation and goal setting for department staff in employment classifications other than tenure system and non-tenure system faculty. 
    • Foster a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion within Carle Illinois College of Medicine that supports all aspects of the education experience including collegial relationships among students, staff and faculty. 

     

    Academic & Curricular Leadership

    • Oversee the clinical components of the M.D. curriculum, including scheduling, faculty engagement, and student clinical experiences.
    • Collaborate with academic leadership to assess and enhance curriculum delivery, student progress, and clinical competencies.
    • Support mentoring of physician educators and promote interdisciplinary, engineering-based clinical education.
    • Implement assessment strategies to evaluate teaching effectiveness and curricular outcomes.

     

    Executive Leadership & Strategic Planning

    • Partner with senior leadership on budgeting, planning, and faculty recruitment.
    • Ensure compliance with LCME accreditation standards and professional clinical requirements.
    • Represent the department on the College’s Executive and Senior Leadership Teams and other institutional committees.
    • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion across all departmental activities.

    Qualifications

     

    Required:

    • M.D. or D.O. degree with current medical board certification and current valid licensure.
    • Five or more years of clinical practice experience; five years of progressive physician leadership experience within an academic setting.
    • Demonstrated leadership in clinical practice and medical education.
    • Strong record of ethical conduct, professionalism, and collaborative leadership.

    Preferred:

    • Additional advanced degree (e.g., Ph.D., M.Ed.) or relevant experience in education.
    • Clinical specialty focus in Pathology, Radiology, Emergency Medicine, or Pediatrics.
    • Familiarity with academic medical center structures and LCME standards.
    • Commitment to innovation in medical education and integration of engineering principles.

    Compensation Details

    The leadership compensation range for this position is $160 – $225 per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s clinical specialty, experience, qualifications, licenses, shifts worked and clinical compensation model.
