Job Highlights
MaineHealth is seeking a Medical Director and Division Chief of Nephrology to join their well-established, collegial group in Portland, Maine. The Division of Nephrology provides a full array of clinical services that encompass acute and chronic kidney disease, renal replacement therapy, apheresis, critical care and interventional nephrology, kidney transplantation, renal sonography and kidney biopsy. This integrated leadership role provides academic, clinical and administrative oversight for nephrology services across the health system and supports MaineHealth’s tripartite mission of clinical excellence, education and research.
This leadership position offers:
- Teaching and mentoring nephrology fellows, medicine residents and medical students from the Maine Medical Center-Tufts University School of Medicine Medical School Program

Qualifications:
- MD or DO from an accredited medical school
- Fellowship-trained in Nephrology
- Board Certified in Nephrology
- Rank of Associate Professor or Professor
- Minimum 7–10 years of clinical practice
- Minimum 5 years in medical leadership
Academic Leadership Responsibilities:
- Collaboration with GME and UME leadership and Department Chairs to support all aspects of medical education within the discipline of nephrology for medical students, residents and fellows
- Oversight of nephrology teaching programs
- Promotion of faculty engagement in MaineHealth’s clinical, educational and research missions, including recruitment, development, mentorship and academic advancement
- Collaboration with MaineHealth research leadership to support and mentor clinical, translational and health-services research
Clinical Leadership Responsibilities:
- Oversight and advancement of high-quality, patient-centered nephrology care across ambulatory and inpatient settings
- Leadership in the development and implementation of innovative care models, clinical pathways and quality-improvement initiatives
- Collaboration with Department of Medicine leadership, service lines and operational partners to develop and maintain clinical policies, practice guidelines and performance-improvement initiatives
Administrative and Operational Leadership Responsibilities:
- Participation in ongoing OPPE and FPPE processes
- Leadership in faculty and APP recruitment, onboarding, engagement, development and retention
- Support for division members’ participation in regional and national professional societies, leadership development programs and academic promotion
- Attendance and participation in meetings and workgroups necessary to fulfill academic, clinical and administrative responsibilities
- Performance review and periodic reassessment of responsibilities in collaboration with the Chair, Department of Medicine and relevant administrative leadership
- Provide administrative oversight of the Dialysis Program, ESRD Services, Kidney Transplant Services and Interventional Nephrology Services at MaineHealth.
