The demand for psychiatric care in the United States has never been greater — and the workforce gap has never been wider. Psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) are stepping into that breach, establishing independent and group practices in underserved communities, telehealth platforms, and integrated care settings across the country. But in the majority of U.S. states, they cannot do so without you.

What This Role Actually Requires 

We believe in transparency. This is not a demanding second job. The responsibilities of a collaborating psychiatrist are well-defined, time-limited, and manageable alongside an existing clinical practice or following retirement from full-time patient care. Depending on your state of licensure, typical requirements include: 

• Periodic chart review — commonly 10–15% of an NP's charts on a defined cadence (monthly, quarterly, or per-case as clinically indicated), with documentation of your review in the record 
• Availability for consultation — accessible by phone or secure messaging during agreed-upon hours; not 24/7 coverage, but reliable responsiveness for complex clinical questions and emergent situations 
• Execution and maintenance of written collaborative agreements — state-specific instruments that define scope, protocols, referral pathways, and dispute-resolution procedures 
• Co-signature requirements, where mandated, on controlled substance prescriptions or initial patient evaluations 
• Annual or biennial agreement renewal, inclusive of credential re-verification and any required modifications to protocols
