  • MaineHealth Behavioral Health (MHBH) is seeking a full-time, fellowship-trained, board-certified Psychiatrist to join the Department of Psychiatry at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland (MHMMCP). This role offers a unique hybrid opportunity, combining leadership and clinical practice.

The selected candidate will serve as the General Psychiatry Residency Program Director while also providing psychiatric clinical care. This position supports a diverse patient population across both rural and urban communities.

The MHMMC General Psychiatry residency program combines the intellectual and physical resources of an academic teaching hospital with the patient base and public health commitment of a large community hospital and community mental health center. In addition to the General Adult Psychiatry Training Track, our residency program offers a General Psychiatry/Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Integrated Training Track, as well as a Rural Psychiatry Training Track. Our care continuum and psychiatry residency training sites also include MaineHealth Behavioral Health at Spring Harbor (a free-standing 100-bed psychiatric hospital) and MaineHealth Behavioral Health, a region-wide comprehensive mental health organization. MHMMCP also includes the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, the state’s only pediatric tertiary care center and only Level 1 Trauma Center.

MHMMC has an academic affiliation with Tufts University School of Medicine and offers the best aspects of patient care and academic stimulation. Residents are involved in teaching medical students from Tufts and from the nearby University of New England. Residents are also actively involved in department governance and decision-making, participating in department retreats and quality improvement projects, and having formal representation on departmental committees.

We are very interested in furthering the practice of psychiatry in New England - particularly in Maine. We have special options for rural psychiatry rotations while offering community-based training experiences in Portland. We are proud of our program and take great pleasure in the success of our graduating residents.

MHMMC is a nationally recognized academic medical center with an impressive history of outstanding and innovative residency and fellowship programs. MHMMC is approved to train over 400 trainees in our 17 ACGME-accredited residency programs, 19 ACGME-accredited fellowship programs, two rural tracks and rural concentration. We have a culture of continuous quality improvement and our performance in the areas of safety, quality, and satisfaction are consistently excellent. Physicians are expected to apply for faculty appointment to the Tufts University School of Medicine.

The Program Director has full responsibility, authority, accountability for program administration & operations; teaching & scholarly activity; resident recruitment and selection; evaluation, promotion, discipline; supervision; and faculty development.
