  • The Division Chief reports directly to the Vice President of South Shore Medical Center and indirectly to the Chair, Department of Surgery at South Shore Hospital for Urologic Surgical and Perioperative Service needs. Formal reporting on matters relevant to the quality of Divisional medical care occurs through weekly or biweekly meetings.

    The responsibilities of the Division Chief include:

    • Embrace and further the engagement and coordination of physicians, APCs, nursing and staff.
    • Provides leadership, organization and direction for shaping team culture.
    • Endorse and lead division wide practice improvement initiatives along with operations and nursing.
    • Review patient satisfaction reports for the division and address areas for improvement addressed with specific action plans.
    • Establish, track and develop continuous improvement strategies for clinical quality and access goals.
    • Establish protocols and best practices for the patient population served, working collaboratively with other Divisions’ clinical and operational leaders.
    • Lead continued growth of the Division through the recruitment and integration of new physicians and APCs.  
    • The leadership within the division is a triad of the Division chief, and the nurse and operations leads.
    • The triad will set the agenda and run Division meetings with all providers and operational and nursing leaders.
    • The triad will have weekly meetings to review operations, nursing, and provider strategies to effectively manage the Division.
    • The triad will meet as necessary along with other key stakeholders to review safety, quality, productivity, human development, and cost metrics, and to problem solve within these areas to be more effective.
    • Ensure adequate divisional coverage at all times, managing vacation and schedules conflicts.
    • Ensures that all clinical providers within the Division are meeting the clinical and operation standards set forth by SSMC
    • Monitors quality and appropriateness of medical care.
    • Manages provider relations and professionalism issues, assist with clinical patient complaints, and provide performance improvement guidance and support.

    Provide leadership and oversight for all urologic surgical activities within the Department of Surgery. Represent the Urology service at the Operating Room Committee and OR Executive Committee, ensuring the division’s needs and priorities are effectively communicated. Support and optimize robotic surgery utilization for Urology, including case allocation, efficiency, and strategic planning. Participate in block time management for all urologists, ensuring equitable and efficient use of surgical resources. Attend Division of Surgery Morbidity & Mortality (M&M) conferences and ensure full participation of all Urology providers. Promote and oversee Urology’s engagement in all quality, safety, and performance improvement initiatives within the Division of Surgery. Ensure adherence to surgical standards, clinical protocols, and best practices across all Urology surgical services.
