Anesthesiology Residency Program · Lexington, KY
The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Kentucky aims to teach the information, skills, and attitudes necessary to achieve and maintain clinical excellence. There is no substitute for actual clinical experience, and the volume and diversity of surgical procedures and anesthetic techniques fulfill these requisite needs. These clinical experiences are supplemented by an extensive didactic program including visiting professors, case discussion conferences, sub-specialty seminars, and classes aimed at preparation for board examinations. Because acquiring existing knowledge is not sufficient, the department also strives to foster an attitude of staying current with changes in the specialty through a series of critical analyses of relevant journal articles to allow residents to learn how to evaluate the medical literature. The goal is to provide these learning objectives in an environment where residents are treated as colleagues and there is recognition that life exists outside of the hospital. Learning occurs primarily in what is described as an apprenticeship model, where faculty function as teachers and supervisors of residents, mentors, and role models. In summary, our objective is to provide trainees in our program with the skills (scientific, analytical, and interpersonal) and attitudes necessary to adapt to technological advances and the changing medical care environment. We will host two virtual Open Houses for the 2026 AAMC Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS): August 19, 2025, and September 2, 2025.
