Founded in 1849, the University of Michigan Department of Surgery is a vibrant and diverse group of outstanding faculty, residents, and scientists dedicated to the very best in patient care, research, and education. The General Surgery program is designed to provide the foundational instruction, experience, and feedback necessary for the development of the exceptionally-talented independent surgeon for any setting. The program’s track record of preparing future leaders in academic surgery is unparalleled. In addition to the innovative clinical training is provided by surgical leaders, most residents spend an additional 2 years of mentored academic development in either basic science or health services research. Resident academic quality and productivity are outstanding and help to form the basis for a future career as an academic surgical faculty member.
