Join Our Team as a Staff Pathologist at the Eastern Oklahoma VA Healthcare System – Serve Those Who Served

The Eastern Oklahoma Veterans Health Care System is seeking a dedicated and passionate Staff Pathologist to join our esteemed team at the Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center in Muskogee, OK. This is more than just a job; it's an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of our nation's Veterans. As a Staff Pathologist, you will play a crucial role in providing high-quality care to those who have bravely served our country.

Opportunity Highlights

  • Full-Time Permanent Position: We are inviting applications for an AP/CP boarded Staff Pathologist. We have an interesting case mix of biopsy-predominant surgical specimens and non-GYN cytology cases (~ 5500 surgical specimens per year, increasing ~10% per year), rare after-hours clinical lab phone calls while on call (<1 per month average), virtual tumor board 2-3 times/month, and light administrative duties when the pathology chief is on leave. CP duties include peripheral blood smears, body fluids, crystal analysis, and basic blood banking. No GYN cytology interpreted in house. Excellent work-life balance is attainable with opportunities for career mentorship. Join a multidisciplinary team focusing on providing exceptional care to Veterans.
  • Collaborative Environment: Work within a supportive team of one full-time Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (80% admin/20% clinical), one full-time staff pathologist, and one part-time staff pathologist (variable schedule) actively contributing to patient care through surgical and clinical pathology.
  • Clinical Excellence: Work in a collegial practice environment with primary care, surgery, oncology, medicine and other specialty providers.
  • Fellowship Training: Candidates currently completing an ACGME-accredited AP/CP residency are welcome to apply. American Board of Pathology AP/CP certification is preferred.
  • Competitive Compensation: Enjoy a proposed compensation range of $275K—$400K, with opportunities for education debt reduction through our Employee Debt Reduction Program (EDRP). Receive up to $40,000 per year for up to 5 years (Total $200,000 Tax-Free) toward qualifying student debt.
  • Work-Life Balance: Your schedule will be from 8 AM to 4:30 PM Monday to Friday, with light phone-only call coverage nights and weekends.

Looking to the Future!

The pathology service will relocate to a new hospital facility in Tulsa, OK, in 2026**. This presents a fantastic urban opportunity for experienced pathologists seeking a better work-life balance or new pathologists looking to grow within the VA. Our department and facility promote collaboration and provide opportunities for professional growth as we serve the veterans who have served us.

Contract buyout program: VHA Contract Buy Out Program: This position may be eligible for the Physician / Provider Contract Buy Out Program (CBOP), which authorizes VHA to buy out service contracts (Locum agreements, loan repayments, sign-on bonus contracts, Physician-owned practices) in exchange for employment at certain rural or highly rural facilities for a period of obligated service (minimum 4 years).
