Location: Tuskegee, AL (primary) + potential coverage in Montgomery, Dothan, Fort Rucker, Monroeville (AL) and Columbus (GA)

The Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS) is seeking Board Certified/Board Eligible Psychiatrists for ongoing locum tenens coverage across inpatient and outpatient settings. Providers will deliver comprehensive psychiatric care to Veterans within a multidisciplinary Mental Health service line.

This is an excellent opportunity for psychiatrists seeking consistent, long-term assignments, predictable daytime hours, and structured federal clinical environments.

• Monday–Friday, 8:00 am–5:00 pm
• Rotating call shared among a pool of 8 providers
  • Phone response within 15 minutes
  • Onsite response within 60 minutes if needed
• Call includes nights, weekends, and federal holidays (rotation is distributed across group)

Assignments may include:

• Inpatient psychiatry
• Outpatient mental health clinics
• Tele-psychiatry support as appropriate
• Multiple CAVHCS campuses (depending on staffing needs)
• Conduct psychiatric evaluations, admissions, diagnoses, and treatment
• Participate in interdisciplinary rounds
• Manage care through discharge or transfer
• Complete VA-compliant medical documentation
• Evaluate new patient referrals
• Medication management for chronic and severe mental illness
• Complete E-consults (evaluation + disposition)
• Perform post-hospitalization follow-ups
• Meet VA access standards (including <30‑day visit requirements)
• 6–6.5 bookable clinical hours per day
• Approx. 6 × 60‑min visits or 12 × 30‑min follow-ups daily
• Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry
• Active, unrestricted U.S. medical license (any state or territory accepted)
• Active DEA registration
• NPI number
• Must meet all VA credentialing and privileging standards

Credentialing typically includes:

• Background check
• Immunization & TB screening
• CME documentation
• Malpractice history
• Predictable daytime hours & manageable caseload
• Collaborative VA team with strong nursing and mental health support
• Multiple sites available for clinicians who enjoy variety
