Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Radiotherapy Planning, Delivery, and Quality Assurance:

  • Plan, deliver, verify, and monitor quality assurance of radiotherapy at all levels of complexity.
  • Recommend optimal modalities and treatment techniques for patients.
  • Ensure the quality, safety, and accuracy of radiation treatments through evaluation and monitoring.
  • Safely operate all radiation planning and delivery devices.

  • Technical Oversight and Program Management:

  • Implement radiation therapy for cases of outstanding technical difficulty and responsibility, providing knowledge-based solutions.
  • Plan and direct a specialized program covering all physics and clinical aspects of external beam treatment procedures.
  • Provide technical oversight for entry-level TMPs, medical dosimetrists, radiation therapists, and oversee Residents.

  • Consultation and Treatment Planning:

  • Oversee radiation therapy treatment planning and design.
  • Approve treatment plans and monitor the accuracy of treatment data in medical records.
  • Offer consultation to radiation oncologists on difficult treatment cases.
  • Perform patient-specific treatment validation measurements.
  • Develop policies and procedures for advanced treatment modalities.

  • Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance:

  • Develop and operate a medical physics quality assurance program.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards within the Radiation Safety Officer's program.
  • Conduct complex problem diagnosis and scheduled quality assurance to ensure the safe operation of radiotherapy equipment.

  • Education and Training:

  • Educate radiation oncology team members on safety issues related to radiotherapy planning and delivery.
  • Follow VHA, AAPM, and other applicable code of ethics to maintain high professionalism and care standards.

  • Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform calibration, acceptance testing, and clinical commissioning for radiotherapy systems.
  • Utilize advanced planning techniques such as 3-D treatment planning, IMRT, and SBRT.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines, communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats, and use technical writing considerations.

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with radiotherapy devices for external beam radiotherapy.
  • Expertise in high and low dose rate brachytherapy simulation, planning, dosimetry, and treatment methods.
  • Knowledge of shielding methods, radiation survey methods, and regulatory requirements for radiation safety.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex equipment problems and emergencies.
  • Competency in calculating radioactive decay and disposing of radioactive sources per state and federal regulations.

Work Schedule:

  • Full-time: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
  • Telework: Not Available
