  • Dr. Mark S. Gold is an inventor, Psychiatrist, Distinguished Professor, Chairman, pioneering translational and new treatment researcher. Gold hypothesized rebound hyperactivity in locus coeruleus and then proved clonidine efficacy in opiate withdrawal .His research has changed health care delivery allowing new detox options, pain treatments, abstinence, and naltrexone maintenance focusing on relapse prevention . Gold and colleagues hypothesized that cocaine caused a relative dopamine deficiency. Gold showed cocaine was addicting , identified the cocaine-dopamine connection accompanied by anhedonia. As a Professor, Eminent Scholar, Distinguished Professor, and Chairman Gold pioneered the study of smoke vs drug self administration leading to clearer understanding of second hand tobacco, opium, and cannabis smoking . Gold's groundbreaking work in Afghanistan on children of opium smokers was recently published in Lancet. Gold started the Division of Addiction Medicine, and Florida's Recovery Center . Gold and Colleagues at Princeton University defined addiction liability of sugar and hedonic overeating . This model has allowed for development of new treatments for overeating based on addiction treatments.ASAM presented Gold with the John P. McGovern " Annual Award on Addiction & Society "... for numerous highly meritorious contributions ". Gold received the PATH Lifetime Achievement Award (2016) in NYC with Obama Drug Czar Botticelli, commending Gold for" Lifetime" pioneering work in MAT, prevention, education and training. According to a review in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA 272:18, 1996), "Mark S. Gold, M.D. the most prolific and brilliant of the addiction experts writing today. Dr. Gold has spent his career trying to bridge the gap in medical education and practice with the belief that addictions are diseases and that all physicians have a critical role in prevention and, if that fails, in early identification and prompt treatment."

    Gold was the recipient of the 2019 Addiction Policy Forum Pillar of Excellence Award for research,[1] 2015 John P. McGovern Award in honor of his contributions to public policy, treatment, research, and addiction prevention,[2] and 2013 Chinese National Academy of Sciences, International Scientist Award.[3]

    Gold was the University of Florida Distinguished Alumni Professor for 2011-2014.[4][5] He was the Donald Dizney Eminent Scholar and was a distinguished professor of psychiatry, neuroscience, community health and family medicine. He is the former chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Florida College of Medicine.[6][7]
