- Dr. Charles Bruen is a practicing cardiac/medical intensivist and mobile ECMO/ECPR clinician who serves as the ECMO Medical Director at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN, and Associate Medical Director of the Minnesota Mobile Resuscitation Consortium (MMRC) at the University of Minnesota. An MIT-trained aerospace engineer, he led the development at Beal Aerospace of the largest hydrogen peroxide–propelled liquid rocket engine ever built. He transitioned to medicine, earning his MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and completing a combined internal medicine/emergency medicine residency at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN, followed by advanced training in critical care and emergency cardiology. His clinical and academic work focuses on cardiac arrest and resuscitation systems, extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR), ECMO, and cardiogenic shock. He is an active investigator and educator with peer-reviewed publications and invited teaching in translational resuscitation and critical care research.
