- Dr. Mariano is a Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine and is Chief of Anesthesiology at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. He has developed techniques and patient care pathways to improve postoperative pain control, patient safety, and other outcomes and has published over 300 articles. He has held leadership positions in multiple professional organizations: President of the California Society of Anesthesiologists; ASRA Pain Medicine Board of Directors; Council Member of the Association of Anesthesiology Subspecialty Program Directors; and currently the Section Chair for Education and Research and Current Procedural Terminology Advisor for the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). He serves as a member of multiple journal editorial boards including being the first Editor of Anaesthesia from the U.S. He is a recipient of the Veterans Health Administration’s John D. Chase Award for Physician Executives Excellence, Distinguished Service Awards from ASRA Pain Medicine and ESRA Spain, and Distinguished Educator in Anesthesiology Award from ASA and the Society for Education in Anesthesia. At the national level, Dr. Mariano has worked on key national healthcare initiatives including the accreditation of regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine fellowships, pain management guidelines, development of quality and cost measures in perioperative care, creation of new current procedural terminology codes, and the National Academy of Medicine Action Collaborative on Combatting Substance Use and Opioid Crises.
