  • Dr. Hari Nathan is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan. Dr. Nathan completed both his undergraduate and medical education with honors at The Johns Hopkins University. He was awarded a PhD in Clinical Investigation from The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He completed his general surgery residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and a clinical fellowship in complex general surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he also served as the Chief Administrative Fellow in Surgery. He joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 2014.

    Dr. Nathan’s research seeks to identify strategies to improve outcomes and control costs for surgical care. His work has been funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the National Institute on Aging. He has done internationally recognized work on the quality of cancer surgery and prediction of prognosis after cancer resection. More recently, his research has focused on variation in surgical quality and costs within hospital systems. He was awarded the 2018 American College of Surgeons Joan L. and Julius H. Jacobson II Promising Investigator Award.

    Dr. Nathan is heavily involved in regional efforts to improve healthcare. He is the Medical Director of the Michigan Value Collaborative (MVC), a coalition of 106 Michigan hospitals focused on improving healthcare value in Michigan. He is an expert in using real-world data to profile hospital performance and identify opportunities for improvement. Through MVC, he designs and implements pay-for-performance programs to incentivize hospital performance.
