Summary

  • Dr. Michael Cowl Gordon is an addiction medicine physician in Atlanta, GA. He received his medical degree from University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1967. He closed his private practice in September, 2019. He retired from his position as the Medical Director of The Berman Center in Atlanta on March 1, 2023. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and Board Certified in Addiction Medicine. Now that he is retired fully from clinical medicine, he is devoting his time to writing. He published The Twelve Step Pathway: A Heroic Journey of Recovery in 2023 (Rowman & Littlefield). This is the first in-depth examination of addiction recovery as a heroic journey, using the framework of Joseph Campbell. Using personal stories, it illustrates how the twelve steps act as a guide to the successful lifetime journey of recovery. In February, 2025 he published Seeking a Higher Power: A Guide to the Second Step (Authorhouse). This book is designed to help newcomers to twelve step recovery who have difficulty with all the "God-talk" in the twelve step meetings and literature. It offers people new ways of approaching the idea of a higher power that may help overcome reluctance to try a twelve-step program. The book may also be useful to anyone seeking answers to perplexing questions they may have about finding meaning and purpose, as they are confronted with the painful difficulties that inevitably arise in life.
