- Dr. Moataz D. Abouammo, MD, PhD, is a Research Associate in the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and serves as Lab Director of the OSU-ALT-VISION Lab. Trained as an otolaryngologist and skull base surgeon in Egypt, he hold a faculty appointment as Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, Tanta University, before completing advanced fellowship training in Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery at Ohio State. Dr. Abouammo is internationally recognized for his expertise in endoscopic skull base surgery, surgical anatomy, clinical research, and 3D photogrammetry–based surgical education. He is the innovator of the Nasofrontal Trephination Approach, a novel surgical corridor to complex skull base regions, which earned the Rhoton Award at the 34th North American Skull Base Society Conference and was featured on the cover of Operative Neurosurgery. He also developed the Nasopharyngo-Septal Butterfly Flap for skull base reconstruction. In 2025, he received the Ilija Karanfilov Award of Excellence in Research, the highest departmental honor at Ohio State. A prolific scholar with over 50 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Abouammo is a frequent international speaker, journal reviewer, and course instructor whose work bridges anatomical discovery, surgical innovation, and clinical translation to improve outcomes in skull base surgery.
