Summary
- William “Brett” Perkison, M.D., MPH, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas (UT) School of Public Health in the division of occupational and environmental sciences. He obtained his medical degree at UTMB Galveston and after his intern year, served for three years as a general medical officer in the U. S. Navy. After returning to training, he completed residencies in Family Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and Occupational and Environmental medicine at the UT School of Public Health. During the course of his career, Dr. Perkison has been the medical director for primary care and occupational medicine clinics in both community health outpatient and hospital-based employee health care settings. He has also been a regional medical manager in industry, overseeing occupational health departments in manufacturing and corporate environments. Since joining the UT school of public health faculty in 2016, his research interests have been focused on the areas of the development of worksite chronic disease management programs and disaster preparedness. His main focus in disaster prevention stems from his participation in disaster response efforts in hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Ike, and Harvey. Immediately after hurricane Harvey he led his department’s outreach effort to distribute 3000 personal protection kits to recently flooded residents in the area. He is currently developing e-learning technology that can provide workers with interactive e-learning education prior to a disaster and with logistical real time information during the event that will help them work safely and effectively. In addition to papers on his research, he has also been a coauthor on two guidance statement from the American College of Occupational on health effects related to climate change.
