I am a neurosurgeon and chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at UHealth – the University of Miami Health System. My research interests have focused on developing cellular transplantation strategies to repair injuries within both the human central and peripheral nervous system.
After performing the world’s first nerve graft using a combination of a patient’s own nerve and Schwann cells to repair a severely injured sciatic nerve in 2013, a team of UHealth neurosurgeons now have Phase 1 trials underway that extend the use of Schwann cells to include patients with severe peripheral nerve injuries. Following the completion of a trial in patients with sub-acute spinal cord injury (SCI), we are enrolling patients with chronic SCI using Schwann cells combined with exercise and rehabilitation. This trial and others at UHealth and our Miami Project to Cure Paralysis fuel the hope for a cure for paralysis and developing treatments for neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
