Summary

  • Dr. Andrea Leonard-Segal is a rheumatologist based in Washington, DC. She is a graduate of the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (1976) where she was admitted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the same institution. She also trained as a fellow in Rheumatology at MedStar Health/Georgetown University Hospital. Following training she worked in the Division of Rheumatology at the Washington, D.C., Veterans Administration Medical Center, which was affiliated with the Georgetown University Medical Center Division of Rheumatology. She took care of patients, trained internal medicine residents and rheumatology fellows, conducted clinical research, and reviewed clinical trial protocols for the hospital’s institutional review board. During those years, she developed an interest in psychosomatic pain.

Dr. Leonard-Segal currently serves as the President at Andrea Leonard-Segal, M.D. Consulting, LLC and was previously the Director in the Division of Nonprescription Clinical Evaluation at the Food and Drug Administration. For over 25 years, some of which overlapped with her years at the FDA, she has taught medical students and cared for patients at the GW Center for Integrative Medicine in Washington, D.C. The Center plays a role in the research and educational missions of the George Washington University Medical Center, and at its inception, Dr. Leonard-Segal was a member of its Research Committee. Psychosomatic illness is an area of medicine that has been historically under appreciated and under diagnosed, and is still not well taught in medical schools. Dr. Leonard-Segal is grateful that she has had the opportunity to help fill this gap at GWU.

Notably, she has authored a variety of publications in rheumatology and in drug development. She has recently authored the book "Breaking Out of Pain" with three psychotherapists.
