  • Dr. Andrew Klafter is the Director of the Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute. He is a psychoanalyst, psychiatrist, and psychopharmacologist, primarily located in Cincinnati, OH. He also sees patients in the greater NYC area, where he serves as a consultant for a private practice in Suffern NY, and for a FQHC (Federally Qualified Health Center) serving the community of Kiryas Joel in Monroe, NY. Dr. Klafter received his medical degree from SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine, underwent his residency training as a psychiatrist at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia PA, and his psychoanalytic training in Cincinnati, OH. He has led trainings and provided supervision for psychotherapists the U.S., Europe, and Israel. Dr. Klafter's areas of expertise are psychodynamic and psychoanalytic technique, personality disorders, mood disorders (including complex pharmacotherapy for Bipolar Disorder and refractory depression), trauma and post-traumatic disorders, and the interface between religion and psychotherapy. He also serves as a psychiatric expert witness. He provides consultation for therapists and psychiatrists with patients requiring diagnostic clarification, MAO-I antidepressants or other innovative pharmacotherapy for treatment resistant depression, and changes in psychotherapy formulation or technique when faced with intractable resistance or therapeutic impasses.
